This policy explains what information JList collects when you visit jlist.co.uk, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it.
JList is an online news and features publication operating at jlist.co.uk. For the purposes of the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, JList is the data controller for personal data collected through this website. You can reach us at legal@jlist.co.uk.
Your name, email address and message when you use the contact form, send a pitch, request a correction or subscribe to a newsletter. If you comment on an article, the name and email you supply plus the comment itself.
Your IP address, browser type and version, device and operating system, referring page, the pages you view, and the time and duration of your visit. This is standard server and analytics data.
We use contact details to reply to you and, where you have asked for it, to send you our newsletter. We use technical and analytics data to keep the site secure, diagnose faults, understand which articles readers find useful and improve what we publish. We use aggregated, non-identifying figures to report audience numbers to advertisers. Our lawful bases are consent (for newsletters and non-essential cookies), legitimate interests (for site security, analytics and answering enquiries) and legal obligation where a law requires us to retain or disclose something.
Essential cookies keep the site working — they handle security, load balancing and remembering your cookie choices. These cannot be switched off. Analytics cookies tell us how the site is used in aggregate. Advertising cookies may be set by our advertising partners to limit how often you see the same advert and to measure campaign performance. Non-essential cookies are set only after you consent through our cookie banner, and you can change or withdraw that consent at any time through the banner controls or by clearing cookies in your browser.
We work with third-party advertising and analytics providers who may process your data as independent controllers under their own policies. Depending on the campaigns running, these can include advertising networks, measurement providers and our newsletter platform. We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your email address with advertisers.
Articles sometimes embed content from other websites — video players, social media posts, maps. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited that other site, and those providers may collect data about you and set their own cookies. We have no control over that processing.
Contact form messages and correspondence are kept for up to 24 months. Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Comments remain for as long as the article is published unless you ask us to remove them. Server logs are kept for up to 12 months. Aggregated analytics that cannot identify you may be kept indefinitely.
You have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you and to receive a copy, to have inaccurate data corrected, to ask for erasure, to restrict or object to processing, to receive your data in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, email legal@jlist.co.uk. We will respond within one month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
We use HTTPS across the site, restrict administrative access, and rely on reputable hosting and service providers. Some of those providers operate outside the United Kingdom; where data is transferred internationally it is protected by adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses. No transmission over the internet can be guaranteed completely secure.
This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has provided us with information, contact us and we will delete it.
We will update this page when our practices change and revise the date at the top. Material changes will be flagged on the site.
